I couldn't believe my luck when Lesley phoned on that cold January night to tell me I had been successful in the WOTR London ballot.
I have wanted to run the marathon for years, following in my Dad, my aunties and more recently in my sisters footsteps. After over 10 years of trying in the ballot I was amazed that I actually had a place.
After following a 10 week training plan, marathon day finally arrived and it did not disappoint. All my nerves disappeared as soon as I crossed the start line and it was an experience like no other. The noise of the crowd was something else, people cheering me on from the first to the last step, feeling like a celebrity with strangers shouting my name. At one point there was a brass band playing the famous London marathon theme music which brought tears to my eyes! Definite highlights were the wall of noise at the Cutty Sark, seeing my family on Tower Bridge and then seeing them again at mile 22 when the going got tough.
I genuinely loved every minute and despite the painful last 3 miles I didn't want it to end. It was worth every long Sunday training run, every early morning start and every post-work run.
I couldn't have done it without the encouragement of all the Kendal group - as well as Ros from the Exeter group who was a fab virtual support so a huge thank you to all of you.
I envy anyone who beats the odds and is lucky enough to get a London ballot place next year - you will come away with a smile on your face and memories to last a lifetime.

Lesley 2022
I won the club place for the 2021 marathon, but unfortunately due to injury I had to defer my place to the 2022 marathon. I had been rejected from the main ballot for 10 years so I was thrilled to have won this place. In 2021, determined not to miss out on the experience totally I stood on the sidelines clapping for runners in their thousands as they ran past wishing I was running. In 2022 it was finally my turn to run, yet again in the final weeks of training I picked up an injury but nothing was going to stop me! I had an amazing day and there’s no doubt that the crowds distracted me from the pain! Running the London Marathon is a brilliant experience and I felt like a Rock Star when I heard my name being shouted from every direction!
Sue 2017
I won the club place for the 2017 marathon.
To be honest it was a bit of a shock, even though I'd been applying through the main ballot for years!
I ran for the Teenage Cancer Trust and raised almost £3000.
It was a fantastic experience and one that I am very grateful for.
